Spirit of KOA Spring 2026 Recipient

Max Williams

- 2026 graduate from KOA’s Alpha Chapter at the University of Michigan.

“I am grateful to have been selected for the Spirit of KOA Award, this recognition from an organization that has played such a huge part in my life truly means a lot.

During a coffee chat earlier this year, a new member used the term “chosen family” to describe their relationship with their friends. That phrase stuck with me, and it’s since been how I’ve described KOA. I remember joining the Fall of my freshman year, looking for community and maybe a hint of understanding what being a lawyer meant. I found so much more; I was met with open arms by the members and a feeling of home. Through this organization I have met my best friends and people I turn to for everything, big or small, professional or social.

I consider myself to be a different person from when I first joined, and I owe that growth to KOA. The safe space KOA provided me gave me the confidence to take life one step at a time, to take things in stride, and appreciate that there are countless things I don’t know; all of which are life lessons that have reshaped me professionally and socially. It has been a great pleasure to try and pass these lessons onto the new members that came after me as well.

Seeing this organization grow and change has been exciting and it was an honor to be a part of it. For example, back when I rushed, professional trips were a wishful thought, and we’ve since began doing two per year, and I view that as a testament to the amazing people who have transformed the org. I’m excited to see the direction you all continue to take it.

To get the most out of KOA, be sure to talk to everyone and appreciate the people around you. The relationships you build here are what turn KOA into your chosen family.”
